At Localise, we believe that when young people are given the space to lead, incredible things happen. Our recent partnership with AsIAm is a perfect example of what can grow when communities come together with a shared purpose.
AsIAm works to create a society in which every autistic person is empowered to reach their own personal potential. Over the past number of weeks, we were delighted to partner with AsIAm to run a Localise programme, supported by first-year teaching students from St Patrick’s College DCU. From the outset, this was a collaboration built on listening, creativity and action.
After four engaging workshops, AsIAm members began exploring a simple but powerful question: Who in our community might need support – and why? Through thoughtful discussion, they identified social isolation as an issue affecting many older people locally. Rather than just talking about it, they decided to do something about it.
A Simple Idea, A Big Impact
The group organised a fun afternoon and invited members of Leo Street to join them at the DCU Innvovation Hub. What followed was a brilliant example of intergenerational connection in action.
There was pizza (for some of the older guests, their very first time trying it!) and plenty of Uno. Laughter filled the room as stories were shared, cards were played, and new friendships began to form. What might seem like a small gesture, sharing food and playing a game, created a space where everyone felt welcome and valued.
Moments like these remind us that tackling isolation doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with an invitation.
Leadership in Action
We were also delighted to welcome Adam Harris, CEO of AsIAm, who popped in to say hello and witness the good work underway. His visit was a meaningful acknowledgement of the leadership shown by the AsIAm members throughout the programme.
This project captured what Localise is all about: young people identifying a need, taking ownership, and creating positive change in their community. With the support of their peers from St Pats DCU and the wider AsIAm team, the group demonstrated empathy, initiative and teamwork.
Most importantly, they showed that everyone, regardless of age, background or circumstance, has something valuable to contribute.
We’re proud to have partnered with AsIAm on this programme and inspired by the leadership shown by its members. When communities come together like this, we don’t just reduce isolation, we build connection, understanding and belonging.
And as the last cards were played and the pizza boxes emptied, one thing was clear, when communities come together like this, everyone wins… and no one gets left playing Uno alone.
