MyVP initiative empowers young people from all backgrounds to gain skills, build confidence, and connect with their communities

In an ambitious move to reduce social exclusion and foster inclusive youth development, Localise has developed the National Youth Volunteering Portfolio (MyVP), a groundbreaking initiative designed to give every young person in Ireland the opportunity to develop key life skills, gain recognition for their volunteer efforts, and strengthen their connection to community.

Developed in response to growing concerns around inequality, disconnection, and limited access to extracurricular opportunities, MyVP offers a structured, accessible pathway for young people to engage in meaningful volunteer work, regardless of their background, location, or prior experience.

“This isn’t just about volunteering. It’s about inclusion, confidence, and creating real pathways to education and employment for all young people,” said Derek Cleary, Director of Localise

Recognising Skills That Often Go Unseen

One of the core goals of MyVP is to formally recognise the skills and learning that young people gain through volunteer experiences, skills that often go unacknowledged by traditional education systems. Through MyVP, participants can document competencies such as teamwork, leadership, time management, and problem-solving, building a portfolio that can support college applications, job interviews, and career pathways.

For young people who may not have access to formal qualifications or paid work experience, this validation of informal learning can be life-changing.

Reaching Marginalised Communities

Localise has designed MyVP to break down the systemic barriers that prevent many young people from participating in community life. This includes those living in socio-economically disadvantaged areas, high-migrant population regions, and rural communities often overlooked by traditional programmes.

By being free, accessible, and inclusive, MyVP removes financial and structural obstacles that would otherwise limit participation, and empowers young people to take an active role in shaping their futures.

Creating Connection in a Disconnected World

At its heart, MyVP is about belonging. Volunteering through Localise connects young people with peers, mentors, and local leaders, helping combat the isolation that fuels social exclusion. Participants work in teams, collaborate across generations, and take ownership of real-world community projects, gaining a sense of purpose and place.

“When young people feel seen, heard, and valued, they are far more likely to thrive, not only in their own lives but as active contributors to society,” added the Mr Cleary.

A Structured Pathway for At-Risk Youth

MyVP is also proving to be a powerful intervention for at-risk youth, particularly those on the verge of disengaging from education or employment. With its emphasis on purpose, achievement, and real-world application, the programme supports mental well-being and long-term social inclusion.

Participants receive a tangible, credible record of their volunteer contributions, often the first time many have received formal recognition of their strengths.

Using Data to Drive Real Impact

Importantly, MyVP is underpinned by a data-driven approach to inclusion. The platform tracks engagement trends across geography, background, and community type, enabling Localise to identify gaps, allocate resources effectively, and ensure that no young person is left behind.

This insight is particularly valuable in informing national youth policy and ensuring that supports are reaching where they are most needed.

Looking Ahead: A More Inclusive Future

With plans underway for a national rollout, MyVP represents a bold, forward-thinking step towards a more equitable, connected Ireland—where every young person has the opportunity to be recognised, contribute, and succeed.
