Students from the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) programme at St. Declan’s Community College enjoyed an inspiring visit to the DCU Innovation Hub, where they took part in an engaging workshop led by Localise Director Derek Cleary.

The workshop gave students the opportunity to explore the true meaning of volunteering, reflecting on what it is, why it matters, and how it connects back to their own lives. Through guided discussions and interactive activities, the group considered the positive impact that volunteering can have on individuals and communities.

A strong emphasis was placed on the importance of social inclusion and the celebration of diversity within the local community. Students were encouraged to share their own experiences and perspectives, recognising how everyone has something valuable to contribute. The workshop also highlighted how volunteering can help young people develop important life skills, build confidence, and make meaningful connections.

Speaking after the session, Derek Cleary praised the enthusiasm and openness of the group:

“The students showed great insight and creativity in how they approached the themes of volunteering and inclusion. It’s always inspiring to see young people recognise the difference they can make when they get involved.”

The visit to the DCU Alpha Campus not only offered a stimulating workshop experience but also introduced the students to a vibrant university setting, sparking ideas for their future education and career pathways.

This initiative forms part of the Localise mission to empower young people through experiences that build empathy, leadership, and community spirit. By participating in workshops like this, students learn that their voices and actions can play a powerful role in shaping a more inclusive and caring society.

We would like to thank St. Declan’s Community College, their teachers and support staff for their continued support and for facilitating such a memorable and impactful experience for the students.
