There’s something powerful about young people stepping outside their everyday routines and into spaces where connection really matters. Transition Year students from Beneavin De La Salle did just that, bringing energy, warmth, and a sense of community to those who needed it most.

As part of their volunteering journey, the students visited St. Brigid’s Ward for stroke patients and St. Anne’s Ward for the elderly in the Mater Hospital. They also spent time with the Sisters of Mercy nuns, creating meaningful moments across generations. These visits weren’t just about showing up, they were about engaging, listening, and sharing genuine human connection.

From the moment they arrived, the students brought a sense of brightness with them. Whether it was chatting with patients and staff, sharing Easter wishes, or filling the wards with music and laughter, their presence was felt in every corner. And of course, no Easter visit would be complete without a few treats, 150 Easter eggs were delivered and, unsurprisingly, disappeared in record time!

But beyond the chocolate and cheerful conversations, something deeper was happening. These students were developing essential life skills such as communication, empathy, teamwork, and confidence. Volunteering offers a unique kind of learning that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom. It challenges young people to step into new environments, adapt, and connect with others in meaningful ways.

This is the true power of volunteering. It’s not just about giving time; it’s about growing as a person. For the students, these visits provided a chance to see the impact they can have, even through small gestures. For the patients, residents, and Sisters, it was a reminder that they are valued, remembered, and part of a wider community.

MyVP – The National Youth Volunteering Portfolio exists to capture and celebrate these experiences. It gives young people a space to reflect on what they’ve learned, recognise their own development, and build a portfolio that showcases their commitment and growth. Moments like these are exactly what MyVP is all about, real experiences that shape skills, character, and future pathways.

And this is only the beginning. Each visit, each conversation, each small act of kindness builds a generation of young people who are not only skilled, but socially aware, confident, and ready to lead. Through volunteering they are not just making a difference today—they are shaping the kind of communities we all want to live in tomorrow.

Because when young people volunteer, everyone benefits.
