Last Friday, students at St Michael’s Holy Faith Secondary School had the opportunity to take part in an inspiring and hands-on introduction to the world of medicine, thanks to the Association of Women’s Surgeons (AWS), part of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Transition Year students engaged in a series of practical, interactive stations that brought the realities of a career in healthcare to life. These kinds of experiences are invaluable, not only in sparking interest in future pathways, but in helping students to build confidence, curiosity, and a sense of what is possible for them.
Opportunities like this also align closely with the goals of MyVP (My Volunteering Portfolio). By participating in workshops, exploring career pathways, and engaging with visiting organisations, students are actively developing key skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. These are all competencies recognised and celebrated through MyVP, supporting young people to reflect on and articulate their learning beyond the classroom.
At Localise Youth Volunteering, we see first-hand how experiences like these can act as a springboard into deeper engagement. Whether through school-based initiatives or community partnerships, Localise supports young people to take the next step, getting involved in meaningful volunteering that strengthens both their communities and their own personal development.
Our planned programmes of volunteering continue to provide structured, supportive opportunities for students to make a difference. From local community outreach to social action projects, these experiences allow young people to put their skills into practice, develop empathy, and grow as active citizens.
It was a powerful morning of learning, inspiration, and possibility for all involved, and a reminder of the impact that collaboration, opportunity, and youth engagement can have.
A huge thank you to the RCSI AWS team for their time, energy, and commitment to inspiring the next generation 👏
