As part of their Localise Volunteer Activation Programme, members of the Ballyrunners youth group recently brought colour, energy, and compassion to the Mater Hospital, creating a truly unforgettable experience for both patients and staff. Every detail of the visit was pre-planned in two engaging preparation workshops where the young volunteers used their skills and talents to decide on how they would make a positive impact—and they delivered in every sense of the word.
Ballyrunners is a life skills and group work programme designed to support young people in building confidence, developing positive routines, and exploring their goals. It also provides a safe space to reflect on challenges such as substance use, involvement in risky behaviours, and self-worth. Through this support, the programme helps reduce barriers that can make it harder for young people to move forward in their lives.
It is primarily aimed at young adults who have left school early and may face difficulties accessing the job market. The programme aims to support their journey toward further training, education, or employment opportunities.
With this mission in mind, the Ballyrunners took on the hospital project as a unique opportunity for growth and connection. Carrying three gift hampers filled with thoughtful tokens of appreciation, the group showed their support for the hardworking hospital staff. They also brought bags of small gifts, lollipops, and bright Hawaiian garlands for patients in St Veronica’s Ward, St Peter’s Ward, and the Day Surgery Ward. Dressed in fun costumes and accompanied by cheerful music, the group created an uplifting atmosphere that filled the wards with smiles and laughter.
